Homework for J102:

Date due: Aug 28, during the 1st 30 minutes of class

Write a story about a bill pending in Congress (House or Senate). The bill should have been filed by the 14th Congress. The status of the bill should be "pending in one of the congressional committees," i.e. the bill has not been archived NOR has it been approved by the committee and pending 2nd reading.

The story should point out the "significance" of the bill to the readers. You should also try to speak to one of the authors of the bill (preferably, the principal author) to get him/her to explain the bill's relevance and importance and the "why" of the bill.

Another approach to the assignment is to do a story about the affected sector and their reaction to the bill..either the ones supporting the bill or the ones opposing it or both.

Story should be at least 800 words but not more than 1300 words. Do not write LEGALESE..remember that you are journalists writing for the everyday people.

Check these links for sample Congress stories, although they are not exactly the bills pending type of story I'm looking for:

1. Cybercrime bill

2. Agriculture bills (press release)

3. Civil Aeronautics bill
